We'll see if the writers can find more interesting ways to exploit his absence as the season progresses, but this wasn't a bad start by any means. I don't know if that speaks poorly of his character and lack of recent growth, but he has always been the comparatively dull straight man of the show.

Frankly, the show is none the worse off for having Leonard off in a corner. The fact that Sheldon reciprocated Penny's hug at all is a sign of how close the two have become over the course of six seasons. The humor kept to a steady pace and their scenes, but we also got some nice moments of bonding as the two opened up to each other about the lingering embarrassment of B-movie nude scenes and the evils of YouTube's new ratings system.

And even several years after "The Vegas Renormalization," we see that Sheldon feels entitled to Penny's bedroom when he stays the night. It's always funny to see the endless variations on Sheldon's door-knocking routine the writers can cook up. Again, the Sheldon/Penny pairing was the least novel of the episode, especially as it banked on the typical "Sheldon dorks out about something, Penny acts exasperated" brand of humor. I think this episode showed that there's not any real potential or chemistry in an actual romance, but at least Raj's journey of maturity got an extra little push, and we got a few more scenes of our heroes offending the one woman at CalTech they should be walking on eggshells with. Davis isn't exactly the first character I would have expected to attract his attention in a post-Lucy world, but then, I'm never really sure where the writers are taking Raj's love life lately. Elsewhere, this episode piked up where Raj left off in Season 6, now fully willing and able to talk to women without the aid of alcohol. This episode suggests that not only will she stand up for herself a little more this season, but she'll be confronting her own lingering resentment at Sheldon's selfish behavior. It always bugs me when Amy gets treated like the group punching bag in this show. He is, of course, and both ladies had valid points in the argument. Their brief fight was also the closest the episode veered into dramatic territory, with Amy resenting the notion that her Sheldon might be anything less than the ideal boyfriend. It was nice to see these two off on their own for a change and outside the shadows of their significant others. And yes, we've seen episodes focused on Sheldon pestering Penny before, but the dynamic shifted slightly as Sheldon became the one desperate for companionship.Īll three stories held their own, though I enjoyed the Bernie/Amy portion the most. Though Raj was initially paired with Wolowitz, the focus of his little story quickly shifted to an awkward "will they, won't they" romance with Mrs. We rarely see Amy and Bernadette interact without Penny completing the trio. I enjoyed that these pairings were slightly less traditional. Instead, the focus was on breaking the rest of the group into pairs and sending them on different misadventures together. Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and their crew also took the opportunity to squeeze is a budget-blowing shot of Leonard being eaten by a kraken, so I guess there's that. There's not much conflict to explore on his end, or even much humor beyond the sight gag of Leonard partying it up like he's in a club in Ibiza. The key difference between Leonard and Wolowitz is that the former is having a ball being far from home and living it up with his fellow science geeks. True to the title, there was very little of Leonard in "The Hofstadter Insufficiency." But that was probably for the best. But this episode did a fine enough job of exploring the fallout. I wasn't particularly excited about this new direction for the series, as Leonard being away on a research vessel seems entirely too reminiscent of Wolowitz spending the early part of Season 6 on the International Space Station. The actual premiere, "The Hofstadter Insufficiency," obviously played on the effect Leonard's absence has on his friends back in California. CBS kicked off the seventh season of The Big Bang Theory this week with two new episodes.
